Visiting the Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu

We were coming to the end of our incredible 3 months in South America and we had saved our visit to Cusco til the end – mainly because it was the cheapest place to fly out of, but also because it seemed like the perfect way to end the trip. And ultimately what this meant, was that my expectations were high – very, very high.

We knew from the beginning that we never planned on walking the Inca Trail, again because you have to book it way in advance, our fitness levels were not where they needed to be, and our time was becoming limited. So, we decided to do a train trip that included visiting some of the sites in the Sacred Valley.

Here are some of my favourites from our two days in the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu:

The ruins of Pisac

Ollantaytambo, where the 3 valleys meet

The many switchbacks up to the top of Machu Picchu

The current residents of Machu Picchu enjoying their breakfast

The incredible Inca Bridge – can you imagine crossing that plank of wood?!

The grand finale, the beautiful Machu Picchu
